COLUMBIA – The first In-Progress Review meeting was held for the BRAC Business Initiative (BBI), an effort by the local counties to provide tools and resources to small and minority businesses as they pursue federal contracts related to the Base Realignment and Closure program. Aided by a U.S. Dept. of Defense grant, BBI is tracking the activities of 21 test companies, along with their interaction with advisory companies and partner firms. Other review meetings and classes are scheduled this fall for BBI participants and the public.
EDGEWATER – The IKO Foundation, Inc. has donated $100,000 to Anne Arundel Community College for the purpose of establishing scholarships with a preference for students pursuing studies in science, technology, engineering or math. The school plans to award scholarships of $1,000 each toward students’ fall and spring tuition.
ANNAPOLIS – Business consultancy High Street Partners has placed 78 on the Inc. 500 list of the fastest-growing companies. The firm helps organizations create strategies for international expansion that involve finding efficiencies, streamlining operations and reducing risk. Also on the list was the national firm Express Employment Professionals (ranked 14th for revenue), which has a local franchise.
COLUMBIA – Huntsville, AL-based Camber Corporation has purchased the operations and assets of i2S, Inc. and will fold them into its National Security Group. With a high demand for cyber security expertise among the intelligence community, i2S was attractive because of its capabilities in intelligence analysis, knowledge management, systems engineering and enterprise architecture.
ANNAPOLIS – The architectural firm Bignell Watkins Hasser Architects P.A. has won three awards for its work. From Associated Builders & Contractors, the firm had the best retail project under $5 million for Northrock; it won a second ABC award for Metro Park 8, the best commercial project ranging from $20 million to $40 million; and it also garnered the Signatures of Loudoun Design Excellence award from a Loudoun County, Va. group for the Lansdowne Town Center.
LINTHICUM – Network specialist Ciena has deployed its CN 4200 for Colo4Dallas, a data center operator that is calling attention to the flexibility of the high-bandwidth platform in the competitive Texas market. The new service will provide high-performance, low-latency connectivity over dark fiber between the existing data center facility and the INFOMART, a major carrier hotel in the city.
ANNAPOLIS – Conference & Logistics Consultants has signed a contract to manage the logistics of the annual convention of the Electronic Retailing Association to be held September 13-15, 2009 at the Paris Las Vegas in Las Vegas.
COLUMBIA – The property management division of Manekin, LLC has reached a milestone with more than 10 million square feet of space under management throughout Maryland, Delaware and Northern Virginia. The 800 tenants in the portfolio are in property types ranging from shopping centers to urban high rise buildings.
ANNAPOLIS – Medical informatics provider MedAssurant, Inc. sent word that the Disease Management Purchasing Consortium has certified a set of event rate outcomes that validates the firm’s approach to managing chronic illness.
LAUREL – The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) has begun construction of a building set to house the space department. The five-story, 200,000 square foot structure is set to open in mid 2011. Building 200 as it’s known, a $60 million project, will consolidate staff that are distributed among more than 20 buildings.
