LINTHICUM – Network specialist Ciena reports that revenue for Q2 2009 totaled $144.2 million, compared to Q1 revenue of $167.4 million. During the same period a year ago the company reported revenue of $242.2 million, and the CEO expects to head back in that direction soon: “customers continue to spend cautiously…however, based on our direct conversations with customers and supported by trends we are seeing…including recently improved order flow, we expect to deliver sequential revenue growth in our fiscal third quarter.”
CROFTON – The Alliance of Foam Packaging Recyclers (AFPR) has released “Thinking Clean, Acting Green,” an environmental toolkit focusing on expanded polystyrene (EPS) transport packaging. Designed for original equipment manufacturers, it examines common misperceptions about the material and demonstrates how EPS is playing an important role in sustainability. Included is life cycle information from third party sources, recycling guidelines to establish internal collection programs and a packaging insert to promote increased consumer access to EPS recycling.
ANNAPOLIS – Annapolis & Anne Arundel County Conference and Visitors Bureau is looking to drum up interest in the county as a destination through its Chesapeake Adventures campaign. It will encourage vacationers to consider this area and is using social media outlets Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Flickr, as well as user-generated sites TripAdvisor and DiscoverAmerica.com. The three-month effort will include an online trivia contest and interactive map, a walking map, and TV spots on Baltimore stations.
LINTHICUM – Health care benefits provider Aetna has a new suite of plans for Maryland companies to obtain preventative health care without being charged co-pays. The “Wellness on Us” offering packages routine vision exams, physicals, well-child visits, gynecological exams, mammograms and other preventive services in a way that the company says is a first in the state.
ANNAPOLIS – Kaulkin Information Systems is the newest resident at the CIC, the business accelerator for government and homeland/national security initiatives. Kaulkin’s technologies and solutions manage a range of regulatory, compliance, risk management and best-practice capabilities via a multi-module SaaS-Cloud model.
ANNAPOLIS – The City of Annapolis and the U.S. Small Business Administration are presenting details of a new loan program that guarantees America’s Recovery Capital (ARC) loans. These deferred-payment loans up to $35,000 are available to established, viable, for-profit small businesses that need short-term help to make principal and interest payments on existing, qualifying debt. Presentation is tomorrow, Thursday, June 11 at 8:30 am in the City Hall Chambers, 160 Duke of Gloucester Street in Annapolis. Contact is rsblakeney@annapolis.gov.
MILLERSVILLE – That’s because you can pay for it, but if you don’t go there is no benefit to be had. Credit goes to Sharon Sinsky-Hopkins of Light Industries, host of the panel on customer service that was held by the Chesapeake Regional Technology Council. Other panelists, such as Steve Reilly of Global Experiences, which uses salesforce.com, cautioned that customer relationship management (CRM) software can lead to greater time and money investments because it always requires user adoption and re-tooling efforts. Holly Buckner of Customer Service Experts opined that in addition to the technology, CRM involves non-technical elements of people, place and process as a foundation for service delivery. The event was part of the Tech Council’s monthly Tech Focus series.
LINTHICUM – Network specialist Ciena has welcomed Patrick Gallagher to its board. He is the chairman of Ubiquisys Ltd., a developer and supplier of femtocells for the global 3G mobile wireless market, and he serves on the boards of the video-delivery firm Harmonic and Sollers JSC, a Russian automobile manufacturer and distributor.
ANNAPOLIS – Richard Hug has been elected to the board of directors of BankAnnapolis. He is the current chairman and CEO of Hug Enterprises, a firm specializing in business and real estate investment and consulting, and he served on the board of Maryland National Bank from 1986 to 1993.
JESSUP – Auto repair shop Auto Collision, Inc. has begun offering consumers a financing mechanism to cover repairs or just the deductible portion when their insurance will cover the balance. The company launched the initiative because it has seen many drivers increase their deductible limits as a way of reducing insurance premiums, but then they struggle to fund the gap.
