LINTHICUM – The Extrusion Americas unit of Hydro Aluminum introduced OptiGrain™ MG, a lead-free 6061 aluminum alloy with mechanical properties that improve the consistency, surface finish and strength of machined parts. According to the company, the new material minimizes set-up time and recalibrations to increase productivity in machining operations.
ANNAPOLIS – Biodefense firm PharmAthene said its Q1 revenue dropped to $5.5 million from $5.8 million in the same period last year. Research and development costs were also down to $5.7 million from $5.9 million.
HANOVER – Conmed Healthcare Management announced Q1 net revenue of $12.4 million, a 58 percent increase over last year’s Q1. For this third consecutive quarter of profitability, the provider of correctional facility healthcare recorded $2.7 million in gross profit and $118,000 in net income.
TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. has acquired the assets of privately-held LocationLogic LLC, a leading provider of infrastructure, applications, content provisioning, and integration services for deploying and maintaining innovative location-based services (LBS). The wireless technology firm is paying $15 million in cash and $10 million, or approximately 1.4 million shares, in TCS Class A common stock.
PASADENA – Partners In Care has been awarded $35,000 in tax credits by the Maryland Dept. of Housing and Community Development to encourage businesses to support a program for empowering older adults to remain independent in their own homes. A $10,000 donation to the non-profit can net $7,000 in tax liability savings while contributing to a good cause.
ANNAPOLIS – Cloud Services Accounting (CSA) is the name of a new offering from eTelemetry that allows companies to monitor and document the bandwidth each cloud uses for accounting and chargeback services. CSA is included in the company’s latest Metron product release, which provides a bandwidth-tiered capability to ensure application delivery at required service levels.
ANNAPOLIS – In response to ongoing developments with the H1N1 Influenza A virus, iJET Intelligent Risk Systems has begun an interactive Pandemic Briefing series with analysis and advice. The weekly forum occurs each Thursday at noon EDT. The company also launched an online resource for clients with regularly updated information on the virus and its implications for business.
ANNAPOLIS – Software developer RiskWatch and consulting firm The Steele Foundation are teaming together to offer a package of pandemic planning and response for clients. The combination of assessment capabilities in RiskWatch’s software with Steele’s business continuity planning and incident response is expected to give companies a methodical approach to protect employees and minimize business disruption.
ANNAPOLIS – Annapolis Bancorp announced a $450,000 net loss for Q1 2009. The parent company of BankAnnapolis with eight branches in the area, Annapolis Bancorp said the net loss available to common shareholders after accruing for preferred stock dividends was $532,000 ($0.14 per basic and diluted common share) compared to net income available to common shareholders of $525,000 ($0.13 per basic and diluted common share) for Q1 2008.
LINTHICUM HEIGHTS – Aiming to become the third largest coal producer in the U.S., Foundation Coal Holdings announced intentions to join forces with Virginia-based Alpha Natural Resources in an all-stock transaction valued at $2 billion. The deal will result in a $4.2 billion (pro forma revenue) firm with 2.3 billion tons of coal from 59 coal mines and 14 preparation plants. Following the news, Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services placed on the companies its ‘BB-’ corporate credit rating with positive implications.
