MILLERSVILLE – Opportunity Builders, Inc. will hold a ribbon cutting ceremony on March 9 at 10 am with an open house and tours from 11 am – 2 pm. From its new building at 8855 Veterans Highway, the group will provide the vocational training, employment and support services that it has for 47 years to adults with developmental disabilities.
Small businesses and agricultural cooperatives, and most private, non-profit organizations in several counties are eligible for federal economic injury disaster loans as a result of last year’s drought from June through September 30. Loans up to $2 million are available from the U.S. Small Business Administration for businesses in Caroline, Cecil, Dorchester, Harford, Kent, Queen Anne’s and Talbot counties. Applications can be downloaded from www.sba.gov/services/disasterassistance.
LINTHICUM – A division of Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems has successfully completed thermal-vacuum testing of the second geosynchronous orbit (GEO-2) payload. With this key process that proves both performance and functionality, the payload will be installed on the GEO-2 spacecraft and be part of the U.S. Air Force’s Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS). SBIRS is designed to provide early warning of missile launches and support other missions including missile defense, technical intelligence and battlespace awareness.
BALTIMORE – Eighteen historic buildings in Anne Arundel county have been refurbished with the benefit of the Maryland Heritage Structure Rehabilitation Tax Credit Program, according to a report by the Abell Foundation. This represents less than five percent of all tax credit awards under the 1996 program, for which Abell is advocating a revitalization. The state began scaling back the program in 2002.

CTRC also will recognize an individual and company with its Legend’s Circle award, which is given to stalwart supporters of the local technology community.
FORT MEADE – In his address to the BWI Business Partnership last week, Col. Daniel Thomas said he is focused on ensuring adequate transportation facilities as well as privatizing and modernizing utilities at the base. Under construction at Ft. Meade is a new golf course, as well as several buildings designated for the Defense Information Systems Agency, Defense Media Activity, and the co-location of Defense/Military Adjudication Activities. While the population at Ft. Meade will have grown by 12 percent when the Base Re-alignment & Closure plan is finished, the main challenge is “managing the growth’s impact to the environment and broader community.”
