MILLERSVILLE – In a battle pitting introverts against extroverts, staff at the Travel Advantage Network accumulated a significant contribution for the charity Autism Speaks. Employees paid $1 to the organization in order to silence a co-worker for the day, while the co-workers could buy back the right to speak with a $2 donation. More than $100 was raised for the day and was included in the $1,681 total donation from the company.
EDGEWATER – Following a pilot program, the South Anne Arundel Chamber of Commerce is expanding the curriculum of the Connect! Coalition with a February 26 kick-off meeting to emphasize the importance of essential workplace skills. The group is seeking business participation as it offers its training program to students and underserved populations with the aim of instilling the positive behavior and customer service skills that employers require. GLEN BURNIE – OmegaCor Technologies is the name of the company formerly known as Omega PC Technology. The company embarked on the new identity program to coincide with its 12th anniversary as a network solutions provider and IT consulting firm.
ANNAPOLIS – Technology Assessment and Transfer, Inc. has signed an agreement under which ArmorLine will manufacture the company’s Spinel Transparent Products. Developed with federal support, Spinel is a transparent ceramic armor and optical solution with a variety of applications. Military uses include tactical and combat vehicles, while commercial markets are aircraft, trains, bar code scanners, watch crystals, cell phones and PDA devices. Armorline will have Spinel on display March 3 at an invitation-only event in Washington, D.C.
ANNAPOLIS – High Street Partners has obtained a minority investment from SVB Financial Group, the parent company of Silicon Valley Bank. With a customer base of U.S. companies operating overseas, the company will use the funds for growth in several areas including the rollout of a custom platform of applications. This offering will help those customers with finance, accounting, compliance and human resource-related needs.
ANNAPOLIS – Biodefense firm PharmAthene, Inc. last week presented overall positive findings from the federally funded Phase II research on SparVax and Valortim, its two potentially promising vaccines for civilian defense against anthrax infection. Presented at the 7th Annual Biodefense Meeting of the American Society of Microbiology, the research evaluated the safety, tolerability and immunogenic capability of the compounds.
ANNE ARUNDEL – With last Sunday’s final edition of the Baltimore Examiner and the Baltimore Sun’s announcement that it will end lease agreements for offices in Anne Arundel, the local news landscape is mirroring the national trend of the newpaper industry. The Sun, whose parent Tribune Co. has filed for bankruptcy, did spare the Annapolis bureau and expects to maintain its level of coverage in the county.
ANNAPOLIS – BankAnnapolis parent company Annapolis Bancorp, Inc. said its net income in Q4 2008 was $145,000 ($0.04 per basic and diluted share), significantly down from $531,000 ($0.13 per basic and diluted share) for the same period in 2007. The company recorded a $956,000 provision for credit losses in the fourth quarter, boosting its total provision for credit losses in 2008 to $2,375,000 from $448,000 in 2007.
ODENTON – Following last week’s announcement of the debut of Amazon Kindle 2, which will ship February 24, M-Edge Accessories has unveiled its newest collection of jackets designed specifically for the second generation of Amazon’s popular eReader. The jackets protect the device as well as increase functionality with features such as the M-Edge e-Luminator, an integrated booklight.
LINTHICUM – The RENATER research and education network in France will use the CN 4200 platform from network specialist Ciena Corporation to create a proprietary, nationwide network with wavelength-division multiplexing technology. The project will showcase the Ciena product’s new long-haul transport capabilities that expand the platform’s geographical range to more than 1,500 kilometers.
