ALL OVER – Maryland ranks ninth among the states in federal expenditures, totaling $96.3 billion in FY 2010 and third per capita with $16,673 for every state resident. Maryland’s rank per capita for procurement of goods and services ranked second ($4,594), with total procurement of $26.5 billion ranking fourth among states.

ANNAPOLIS – County Executive John Leopold has proclaimed this week as Economic Development Week in recognition of the function’s impact on job growth and investment.  In the first three quarters of 2011, Anne Arundel Economic Development Corp. has tracked 117 new or expanding businesses bringing 3,877 new jobs to the county.

The county exec is coat-tailing on Maryland Economic Development Week that is organized by The Maryland Economic Development Association. MEDA’s program recognizes economic development projects, and includes conferences and workshops.

ANNAPOLIS – The City of Annapolis has received the first of two propulsion systems for its Harbormaster boats, which will be a hybrid of diesel, electric and solar technology.  The diesels will have greater power and run on bio-diesel fuel.

ANNAPOLIS – The Central Maryland Small Business Development Center honored Hollis Minor as the 2011 Maryland State Star.  Minor, who serves the group as a business consultant for Anne Arundel. had counseled 154 clients and helped them increase sales by $1.1 million, obtain $10.1 million in financing, create 29 jobs and retain 91 jobs.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Anne Arundel Community College was awarded $19,730,281 in grant funds to train displaced workers for careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).  The school will partner with employers to provide job opportunities to program graduates.  U.S. Senators Mikulski and Cardin secured the funds from the Depts. of Labor and Education.

Maryland is one of five states that gets credit for tracking how transportation investments create a return for taxpayers, says a report from Pew Center on the States and the Rockefeller Foundation.   Maryland’s DBED piled on showing that every $1 million investment in state projects creates an average of 7.3 construction jobs.  Maryland spent an estimated $3.37 billion on transportation in fiscal year 2010, including federal funds.

COLUMBIA – The National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors honored the One Maryland: Inter-County Broadband Network with the Community Broadband Fiber Network of the Year.  The Network, comprised of 10 central-Maryland jurisdictions, will provide every county with high-tech infrastructure including a total of nearly 4,000 fiber miles connecting 715 anchor institutions.

NEW CARROLLTON – Offices of the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development are slated to be moved from the current Crownsville location to a building that will be newly constructed in New Carrollton.  Move-in is expected to be Fall 2013.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Federal Emergency Management Agency has announced that federal aid is available for the state due to recent story activity from August 24 to September 5.  Funding is available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations on a cost-sharing basis for emergency work and the repair or replacement of damaged facilities in Calvert, Caroline, Cecil, Charles, Dorchester, Harford, Kent, Queen Anne’s, Somerset, St. Mary’s, Talbot, Wicomico, and Worcester.
