OLNEY – Sandy Spring Bancorp/Sandy Spring Bank has elected Robert E. Henel, Jr., to its board of directors. Henel is a former regional president of PNC Bank and a past chairman, president and CEO of Annapolis Banking & Trust Company, an affiliate of Mercantile Bankshares Corp.
LAUREL – Tower Federal Credit Union (a Chris O. Communications client) won third place in the Baltimore Business Journal’s Healthiest Employer award for its structured wellness program including on-site health fairs and vending machines with healthy snacks.
MILLERSVILLE – Mike Steranka has co-written The E-Myth Financial Advisor: Why Most Financial Advisory Practices Don’t Work and What to Do About It. In the book says Steranka, of Retirement Planning Services, financial advisors learn how to build a successful financial planning practice, presumably in part by writing books.
ANNAPOLIS – Christopher Kyanko of business accounting and consulting firm HeimLantz has become a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for the National Association of Certified Valuation Analysts. And, the company’s Zachary Greene has earned the signature credential of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.
FULTON – Mortgage provider NewDay Financial will provide financial support to Purple Heart Homes, a which modifies and adapts homes of veterans with service-connected disabilities. Purple Heart Homes was founded in 2008 by National Guardsmen Dale I. Beatty (SSG USA ret.) andJohn D. Gallina, who were themselves severely injured in Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004.
LINTHICUM – Scott Calliham has joined First Annapolis Consulting, after nearly 15 years in the payments industry including the last seven years with Bank of America. Prior to Bank of America, Scott spent seven years with First Annapolis.
ELLICOTT CITY – Howard Bancorp/Howard Bank reported Q1 net income of $344,000, an increase of 9% from a year ago and up 26% from Q4 2010.
FULTON – LendingSpace will provide its technology using the Software as a Service (SaaS) model to Greenlight Financial Services for mortgages. The LendingSpace Enterprise Lending System will serve as the mortgage loan origination system for Greenlight and its online lending channel, Greenlightloans.com.
ANNAPOLIS – Edward J. Schneider has been promoted to executive vice president of BankAnnapolis, a new position created in recognition of his performance as senior vice president and chief financial officer.

COLUMBIA – CPA firm KatzAbosch notes that employers must provide written information on employees’ W-2 Forms that shows them the cost of health insurance coverage paid during the calendar year. The interim guidance from the IRS came as a result of last year’s national health care law, which provides an exception for employers that issue less than 250 W-2′s.
