KENT COUNTY – The Kent County Commissioners and Board of Education signed a 20-year contract with Washington Gas Energy Services (WGES), to build a 1,579 kilowatt (kW) solar array. This will power Kent County High School, Worton Elementary School and the Kent County Community Center.

EDGEWATER – The Brick Companies is planning to install a solar electric system at the Queenstown Harbor golf course that will produce 70 percent of the electricity used at the clubhouse and cart barn.  The 191 kW solar electric system and a ground mount solar electric system will have more than 800 panels.

COLUMBIA – Southwest Windpower Inc. and Advanced Technology & Research have an exclusive strategic alliance to design and manufacture wind-solar hybrid systems from a single integrated tower. The combination of small wind turbines with microprocessor-controlled solar tracking is expected to deliver more consistent energy generation.

ANNAPOLIS – 350Green and SemaConnect have teamed up to roll out 1,500 electric vehicle charging stations.  350Green brings its network and development capability to the nationwide effort and SemaConnect produces the charging stations.

ELLICOTT CITY – Manufacturer CR Daniels is the production site for RiverSafe RainBarrels, which are designed to capture twice the amount of roof runoff collected by a normal rain barrel.  The barrels are destined for Washington, D.C.’s RiverSmart Homes program and are designed by RiverSides, which is billed as an urban stormwater social marketing firm.

ANNAPOLIS JUNCTION – Astrum Solar is offering solar leasing to homeowners through Constellation Energy.  Electricity generated by the solar panels is purchased at a rate locked in for the next 20 years, and leasing is designed to lower upfront costs.  The company claims that solar can cut electricity purchased from the grid by 40 to 50 percent for the average homeowner.

PRINCESS ANNE – That’s what it says.  The University of Maryland Eastern Shore has created Eastern Shore Energy, LLC, a renewable energy development company focused on projects at multiple sites on the lower Eastern Shore.  It’s the result of a partnership between the Maryland Hawk Corporation, (a non-profit affiliate of the university) and National Renewable Solutions, LLC.

HOUSTON – Champion Energy Services, LLC has been approved as an electricity supplier in the state.  It will serve territories of Allegheny Power, Baltimore Gas and Electric, Delmarva Power and Potomac Electric Power Company.

ELLICOTT CITY – A study of smart grid development found that growth continues, albeit at a moderate rate for key components, according to The Newton-Evans Research Company. The report predicted combined values of key components at more than $10 billion based on results from utilities in more than 30 countries.

LAUREL – Aquilent has landed an IT services and support contract for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory at the Solar Decathlon 2011. The U.S. Department of Energy contract includes a System for enabling on-site, cloud-based infrastructure for competition among 20 teams for the best solar-powered houses.
