BALTIMORE – The Baltimore region retained first-place ranking for academic research funding among 20 U.S. regions, according to the 2011 State of the Region Report. The report from the Greater Baltimore Committee and the Baltimore Metropolitan Council ranked 112 benchmark indicators measuring business vitality, economic health and quality of life.
ALL OVER – 56% of Marylanders have personal experience with business start-ups as a creator, participant or supporter, and 47% have been directly involved in a business start-up, while 28% have owned or operated one. So says the Greater Baltimore Technology Council and Maryland’s Dept. Business and Economic Development in On Entrepreneurism: A Statewide Survey of Business Owners.
CAMBRIDGE – J&R Seafood has apparently increased its export business following the Governor’s trade mission to China. The Dorchester-based seafood processor plans to hire 30 to 40 more full-time seasonal workers.
HANOVER – The Fort Meade Alliance’s Meade Business Connect (MBC) is seeking applications for its Mentorship Program. This 12-session program is designed to help companies in the Fort Meade government-contracting environment. Applications are due Monday, December 19, 2011.

GREENBELT – Chesapeake Hospitality has opened the Doubletree by Hilton Raleigh Brownstone, a new property in NC. With the 190-room hotel the company adds the Doubletree brand to its portfolio that includes Hilton, Starwood and InterContinental Hotel Group.
BWI AIRPORT – Southwest Airlines has added a nonstop roundtrip service from Baltimore to Tucson, AZ. Service will begin February 12.
ANNAPOLIS – More than one-third of bribe demands in the U.S. are premised on winning new business (25%), attempting to influence a government official (5%) or receiving inappropriate treatment such as a favorable court ruling (4%). TRACE’s 2011 BRIBEline United States Report analyzes 73 bribery demands reported anonymously.
