The Chris O-pinion: Rather than call out a few of you who I know have amusing new year’s resolutions (see last week’s column), I am starting a new tradition of opening up the floor for stories about boss behavior during the holidays. My fave was a boss at an Annapolis non-profit a while back who was so thoroughly into the spiked eggnog that he tried to give gifts twice and fell down while being escorted from the room by his embarrassed wife. Learning what not to do is often the more valuable lesson.

HANOVER -The vision of the BWI Business Partnership for 2030 includes an effort to cast the BWI region as a brand, to reposition the Partnership so that it is a clearinghouse for regional issues, to develop a plan for increasing revenues in addition to transportation grants, and to create opportunities to identify and engage the next generation of leadership. The organization’s incoming Chairman Gene Condon, general manager of Arundel Mills, presented the plan at the group’s monthly gathering. A tactical plan and key milestones for the next three years are now under development to meet the big goals.

BALTIMORE – The Baltimore region retained first-place ranking for academic research funding among 20 U.S. regions, according to the 2011 State of the Region Report. The report from the Greater Baltimore Committee and the Baltimore Metropolitan Council ranked 112 benchmark indicators measuring business vitality, economic health and quality of life.

ALL OVER – 56% of Marylanders have personal experience with business start-ups as a creator, participant or supporter, and 47% have been directly involved in a business start-up, while 28% have owned or operated one. So says the Greater Baltimore Technology Council and Maryland’s Dept. Business and Economic Development in On Entrepreneurism: A Statewide Survey of Business Owners.

CLINTON – Nasatka Security received a $20 million order for mobile barriers, ballistic and blast-rated guard shacks, and security device interface hardware to integrate a variety of new and existing force protection equipment for the U.S. Army. The firm will deliver as part of a larger contract by Rapiscan Systems.

ANNAPOLIS – Ginger Cove received a five-year term of accreditation from CARF-CCAC, the only accrediting body for continuing care retirement communities. This is the third consecutive award for the 30-acre CCRC.

CAMBRIDGE – J&R Seafood has apparently increased its export business following the Governor’s trade mission to China.  The Dorchester-based seafood processor plans to hire 30 to 40 more full-time seasonal workers.
