ANNAPOLIS – New York-based REIT Home Properties Inc. purchased Annapolis Roads at 1101 Lake Heron Drive in from Dubin Development Co. The 1970s-era development went for $32.5 million, or about $115,250 per unit.
It is an experience valuable to anyone who has ever bought, consumed, stored or thrown away anything. About 300 tons of stuff a day gets buried for much longer than the time period from raw material extraction and refinement to product usage and disposal. Actually, it’s buried forever after being compacted by a massive vehicle with spikes on its wheels.
The Millersville Landfill & Resource Recovery Facility opened 35 years ago and has about 10 years left before reaching capacity, but recycling may extend that. I’ve always thought the costs are high for the amount of energy and water consumed during various recycling processes, but I also expect that curbside collection costs will be much higher when we have to start shipping that stuff somewhere (hmm, a few countries come to mind). BALTIMORE – According to casino developer David Cordish, his firm has played by the rules and is following the state’s plan for construction at Arundel Mills. Opponent David Jones of the group No Slots at the Mall says the location is too family oriented and wants it elsewhere. At stake is $500 million a year in revenue for the state and $30 million for the county, and 4,000 jobs; voters will decide this fall whether to approve the site. ANNAPOLIS – the Anne Arundel County Council unanimously approved the previously announced agreement for development to move forward on Odenton Town Center. The Halle Companies will pay $15 million to build the central Town Center Blvd.
LAUREL – With the aim of predicting space weather effects, a collection of organizations have banding together and implemented a space-based system to monitor Earth’s space environment. The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, The Boeing Company and Iridium Communications have put in place a system that provides real-time magnetic field measurements.
ANNAPOLIS – Defense juggernaut Raytheon, which has leased 20,000 square feet in Annapolis Junction to support the doubling of its workforce in Maryland by the end of the year, has received funding for training programs. Anne Arundel Economic Development Corp. approved two agreements of $110,000 for training Raytheon staff on cybersecurity, and Maryland’s Dept. of Business and Economic Development is providing up to an additional $50,000.

COLLEGE PARK – BlueWing Environmental is one of the firms that received funding from The Maryland Industrial Partnerships Program to help commercialize the concept for floating islands. Also known as BioHaven Floating Treatment Wetlands, these are made from recycled plastics and function as plants that remove pollution. The company and its partner Prof. Joshua McGrath received $139,000.
ANNAPOLIS – The National Investment Center said overall construction activity for senior housing in the second quarter was 1.9% of existing inventory, which is unchanged from Q1. There are 9,372 units under construction in the 31 largest metro areas, with 1,659 of these units within construction projects started during 2Q10.
BALTIMORE – The Johns Hopkins Institute for Clinical and Translational Research, in collaboration with Anne Arundel Health System (AAHS) and the Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC), has established a new network of academic and community-based clinical researchers. The Johns Hopkins Clinical Research Network will accelerate the transfer of new diagnostic, treatment, and disease prevention advances from the research arena to patient care.
